Kvaratskhelia Injury Could Shape PSG’s Winter Transfer Plans
Paris Saint-Germain may be forced to reconsider its plans for the season after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia suffered a serious right-knee injury against Barcelona. The Georgia international is reported to have torn his anterior cruciate ligament, a diagnosis that would likely rule him out for the remainder of the campaign and leave a significant gap in PSG’s attacking options.
His absence could make a new winger a priority in the next transfer window. French media reports, relayed by Sport, say PSG had already been considering a move for a wide attacker in January. Kvaratskhelia’s injury would add urgency to that search, although the club has not publicly confirmed a target or decided whether to act before the winter window opens.
Why PSG may need another winger
Coach Luis Enrique has several attacking players available, including Ousmane Dembélé, Ferran Torres, Mika Godts, Désiré Doué, Akliouche and Quentin Ndjantou. However, squad depth does not necessarily remove the need for reinforcement. Injuries, fixture congestion and the demands of competing across multiple competitions can quickly place pressure on a team’s forward line.
Dembélé was also injured in the match against Barcelona, making PSG’s situation more complicated. Even when other attackers are fit, replacing Kvaratskhelia’s particular qualities may be difficult. The winger offers direct running, close control and the ability to create chances from the left, giving PSG a different attacking dimension. A potential signing would therefore need to add more than numbers: the club may look for a player who can contribute immediately while also fitting its longer-term plans.
That balance appears to be central to PSG’s reported recruitment criteria. L’Équipe has said the club is looking for a young player with considerable potential who can strengthen its wide positions during the winter transfer period. Such a profile would allow PSG to address an immediate need without abandoning its focus on building for the future.
PSG’s transfer budget and summer sales
PSG may have room to make a substantial investment. The club reportedly generated €333.4 million from player sales during the previous summer transfer window, with Bradley Barcola’s move to Liverpool accounting for €125 million of that total. Those figures suggest the Parisians could be financially equipped to pursue a promising winger, although transfer fees, wages and the player’s willingness to move would all influence any deal.
A strong financial position does not guarantee a January signing. Mid-season recruitment is often more challenging than a summer transfer because clubs are reluctant to lose important players halfway through a campaign. PSG would need to identify a suitable target, agree terms with the selling club and decide whether the player can adapt quickly enough to make an immediate impact.
Nico Williams among the reported candidates
One name attracting attention is Nico Williams. Eurosport has described the Athletic Club winger as a serious contender, noting that PSG have followed him closely over several years. Williams is known for his pace, one-on-one ability and threat in transition—qualities that could make him an appealing option if PSG wants a natural wide attacker.
Any move for Williams would depend on the circumstances of a potential deal. Athletic Club’s position, the player’s own plans and the financial terms would all matter. A transfer prediction at this stage should therefore be treated cautiously: reported interest indicates that a player is being monitored, not that negotiations are underway or that a move is certain.
Other young players have also been linked with the Parisian club. The website Fichajes has placed Ibrahim Maza, one of Bayer Leverkusen’s emerging talents, within PSG’s reported circle of interest. Meanwhile, Sky has highlighted Matías Albert, a highly regarded prospect developing at Borussia Dortmund. These names reflect the kind of youth-focused recruitment strategy PSG may pursue, but their links remain part of the transfer speculation rather than confirmed club decisions.
Could PSG use France’s “joker” rule?
PSG may not necessarily have to wait until January to add a player. French football has a special provision commonly known as the “joker,” which allows clubs to sign one player from another team in France’s first or second division outside the standard transfer windows. The system was introduced at the beginning of the millennium and gives clubs limited flexibility when their squads are affected by unexpected circumstances.
Kvaratskhelia’s serious injury could make PSG eligible to consider using that exception. However, the rule is restricted: it does not provide an open route to sign any player from anywhere, and the club would have to identify an eligible domestic target. PSG would also need to decide whether an immediate move offers better value than waiting for a wider range of options in January.
Transfer prediction: January remains the likeliest moment
For now, the most sensible transfer prediction is that PSG will continue assessing the market rather than rush into a decision. The club has enough attacking options to manage in the short term, but the combination of Kvaratskhelia’s likely long-term absence and Dembélé’s injury could increase the pressure to act. A move through the joker rule is possible, yet a January transfer appears to offer PSG more time to compare candidates and negotiate.
Whether the club ultimately pursues Nico Williams, another established winger or a younger prospect such as Maza or Albert, its choice will depend on both immediate needs and long-term value. Kvaratskhelia’s injury has changed the conversation around PSG’s squad planning, turning a possible winter addition into a more pressing question. Until the club confirms its intentions, however, the names circulating in reports remain possibilities—not a completed transfer or a guarantee of who will arrive in Paris.
